The Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia will demand full investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of a Nigerian, Chizoba Favor Eze, in Ethiopian Prison.
Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) stated this while reacting Eze’s death.
Her reaction is contained in a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of
NIDCOM.
The chairman said the commission ”is in contact with the Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia.
Dabiri-Erewa added that NIDCOM would thoroughly look into the circumstances leading to the incident.
She expressed concern over reported conditions of some Nigerians, serving jail terms in Ethiopia, most of whom were drug related.
She also said the Nigerian Mission in Ethiopia had proposed an MOU between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Ethiopian authorities on transfer of sentenced persons.
Under the proposed MoU, Nigerians sentenced in Ethiopia would return to Nigeria to serve their respective jail terms.
”We are still awaiting response from Ethiopian authorities,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa added that Ethiopia granted amnesty to some Nigerian prisoners in 2019.
But, according to her, some of them still found their way back to Ethiopia and allegedly still committing the same drug related crimes.
The NIDCOM boss sent her deepest condolences to the family of Chizoba, who was said to have died in Kaliti Prison , Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
She died on Sunday March 12, following an alleged physical aggression.
