An Upper Area Court in Jos, on Monday, sentenced a 35-year-old trader, Musa Mohammed, to one-year imprisonment for stealing two bottles of vegetable oil from a provision shop.
The judge, David Damulak, sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Damulak, however, gave the convict an option of a N20,000 fine or 12 months in prison.
The judge said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal acts.

Earlier, the Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that one Esther Ere, the complainant reported the case on Dec. 6 at Laranto Police station.
The prosecutor said that the convict went into the woman’s provision shop, pretending to buy something and stole the items.
He said the vegetable oil valued at N10,000 for the two bottles was recovered from the convict and given back to the shop owner.
The offence, he said, was punishable under the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code.
