Elections: No preference for any candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has no preference for any candidate in the afternoon general elections.

INEC made this declaration in s statement on Thursday in Abuja.

The declaration was in reaction to negative expressions by some Nigerians to the “like” INEC expressed on its Twitter handle.

A tweet described Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as “an opportunist”.

Many followers of the INEC Twitter handle expressed outrage at the action of a supposedly independent electoral body.

But INEC denied the action, saying it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the issue.

“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission has been drawn to post on its Twitter handle, liking a post relating to one of the 18 presidential candidates.

“The commission is an independent electoral body and does not have a preference for any candidate or political party.

“The commission assures all Nigerians of its neutrality and will conduct a general election that is free and fair to all.

“The allegiance of the commission is to the people of Nigeria.

“In the meantime, the commission is investigating the circumstances that led to the liking of the said post.

”It will take appropriate disciplinary actions if it establish infraction,” INEC said.l
