INEC vows to review, use BVAS in next elections

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says the commission will still use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the second leg of the general elections next Saturday.

Yakubu gave the assurance during a meeting with state Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters on Saturday in Abuja.

According to him, INEC is reviewing the BVAS to avoid a repeat of the glitches recorded with last Saturday’s elections.

He said the commission would still use the devices for the Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

”On election day, we will once again deploy the BVAS for voter accreditation and result management.

”The deployment of BVAS has sanitised voter accreditation as can be seen from the result of recent elections.

”Since last week, the commission has intensified the review of the technology.

”This is to ensure that glitches experienced, particularly with the upload of results are rectified.

”We are confident that going forward the system will run optimally,” Yakubu said.

In his welcome remarks, Yakubu noted that the meeting was to review performances at last week’s elections.

He noted that the commission learnt lessons from last week’s elections, especially as it relates to logistics management.

The INEC boss urged RECs to work harder to ensure that the governorship elections do not experience the same glitches.

He also called for disciplining of staff members who erred.
