Lagos Island residents, on Sunday, trooped out en mass to buy food items at the Food Market Hub facilitated by Mrs Omolara Oyekan-Olumegbon, a lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency I in the State House of Assembly.

TheNewsZenith reports that Oyekan-Olumegbon organised the market hub, tagged “Senator Oluremi Tinubu Food Bank” at the Oluwole Car Park.

The project is in collaboration with “The Queen Mother Organisation”. It is Local council initiative, similar to the “Onje Eko” food market initiative of the Lagos State Government.

Organisers sold foodstuffs at a 75 per cent discount, thus giving many people, the opportunity to buy at affordable prices.

Our correspondent reports that foodstuff on sale included grains like beans, maize and rice. Others are yam, spaghetti, chicken, egg, palm oil, bread, palm oil and vegetables.

Speaking at the opening of the market hub, Oyekan-Olumegbon said the initiative was to reduce effects of the harsh economic condition on people in her constituency.

The lawmaker noted that the market hub initiative was part of her commitment to the boost welfare of her people.

This is the first food hub project and few people supported this initiative by paying 50 to 75 per cent subsidy on certain foodstuffs.

“For instance, chicken which is sold for N8,000 in open market is selling here for N2,500.  Also, a paint of rice selling for N7,500 in regular market is N2,000 here.

“This is our little way of making the lives of people better. We hope to serve our community better next week because this is the first edition and we are learning,” the lawmaker said.

She pledged to continue exploring and implementing initiatives that impact positively on residents in the community.
