NEMA says flood displaces 1m persons in six months

No fewer than 1,048,312 Nigerians have been ravaged by flooding since April, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

TheNewsZenith reports that the Director-General of the agency, Mrs Zubaida Umar, announced the figures at the National Emergency Coordination Forum (ECF), on Thursday, in Abuja.

According to Umar, 259 people died in the flooding while it displaced 625,239 others.

NEMA boss said flooding has impacted 29 states and 172 local government areas have been, affecting 1,048,312 people.

“It displaced 625,239 and resulting in 259 deaths.

“NEMA has activated Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in some states. We have also deployed additional staff to support search and rescue operations.

“The agency has also provided water purification equipment and critical search and rescue tools to affected states,” TheNewsZenith quoted her as saying.

The DG emphasized the need for a coordinated response to mitigated the effect of the disaster.

She expressed appreciation to the international partners for their support.

Umar encouraged them to continue to provide assistance while monitoring the situation.

She commiserated with victims of the disasters, assuring them of the Federal Government’s support.

NEMA boss said she convened the meeting to receive updates on the flood situation and assign responsibilities to stakeholders.

“Although flooding cannot be prevented, te government is making efforts to mitigate its impact.

Mrs Emmanuela Offiong, Assistant Director, Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation also spoke at the meeting.

Offiong spoke on the need for proper fact-checking and communication on disaster management to avoid disinformation and misinformation.

NEMA’s Assistant Director of Search and Rescue, Wagami Madu, presented an update on the flooding situation in Borno State.

Madu reported that seven persons died in the Saturday’s disaster.
