Police rescue 17 kidnapped electoral officials in Imo

The Police rescued 17 ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who were kidnapped by gunmen in Imo State, an official said on Saturday.

Chinenye Chijioke-Osuji, The Public Affairs Officer for INEC in the state, confirmed the development to reporters in Owerri.

Chijioke-Osuji said the Police rescued the staff after a distress call.

On receiving the information about the incident “the security operatives swung into action immediately.

The INEC officials were on their way to seven different polling units in the state where they were kidnapped.

The INEC is conducting governorship and state house of assembly elections in 28 out of the 36 states on Saturday

The elections are being rounded up across the country as at the time of filing this report.
