The Society for Underutilised Legumes (SUL), a research-oriented organisation, has elected a new president, Dr Adegboyega Taofeek Tope, at its sixth National Conference and Stakeholders Meeting.
TheNewsZenith reports that Adegboyega is a renowned researcher and former President of the International Association of Research Scholars.
He is also a Fellow of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IARSAF-IITA).
Other newly elected officers are Prof. Kehinde Soetan – National Vice President I; Dr Opeyemi Osundare Tunde – National Assistant Secretary and Dr Faloye Benjamin – National Financial Secretary.
Prof. Kareem Titilope and Dr Bernard Ojuederie became the National Treasurer and National Programme Officer respectively.
Also elected were Dr Jacob Popoola – National Linkage Officer-Universities; Dr Olaniyi Ajewole Oyatomi – National Linkage Officer-Research Institutes and Dr Rukayat Wunmi Jegede – National Internal Auditor.
Dr Kafilat Odesola became Public Relation Officer) while Mr Ihenacho Uzoma is the National Welfare/Social Officer).
Other officers are Dr Daniel Adewale – Ex-Officio I and Prof. Beckley Ikhajiagbe – Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Underutilised Legumes.
TheNewsZenith reports that the National Conference was held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in Ibadan Oyo State.
In his acceptance remarks, Adegboyega emphasised the commitment to advancing research, utilization and commercialisation of underutilised legumes.
He noted that legumes are sustainable, climate-resilient food sources to support food security, nutrition and economic stability in Africa.

The new SUL President highlighted the crucial role legumes play in addressing malnutrition, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering rural communities.
Adegboyega called on stakeholders across academia, industry and government to continue supporting the SUL mission.
TheNewsZenith reports that the conference brought together experts, policymakers and industry leaders to share knowledge, innovations and best practices in legume research and development.
It highlighted the transformative potential of underutilised crops in addressing pressing challenges in food security, nutrition and climate resilience.
Adeboyega said SUL looks forward to working with partners and the newly elected leadership.
According to him, SUL focuses on enhancing legume value chains for improved livelihoods; promoting climate-smart agriculture practices and supporting policy reforms for legume development.
Its other focal points are fostering collaboration among stakeholders and advancing cutting-edge research and innovation.
With this new leadership, SUL is poised to drive impactful projects and innovations, contributing to a food-secure and sustainable Africa.
