Boat capsize: 4 pupils missing in western Tanzania

Four school pupils are reportedly missing after their boat capsized in a crocodile and hippo-infested river in Tanzania’s western region of Kigoma, an official said on Friday.

Salum Kali, the Kigoma District Commissioner, said the pupils were crossing over to a primary school on the other side of the Luiche River when it capsized at 7.30 a.m. local time.

Speaking from the accident scene, Kali said emergency responders rescued two pupils and the captain of the boat.

He added that the other four pupils were still missing.

The commissioner said a team of rescuers were still searching for the missing pupils in the river that flows into Lake Tanganyika.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the boat capsized after strong waves hit it.
