The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says an explosion of a capacitor voltage transformer stirred a fire outbreak on Sunday on its Maryland-Ikorodu 132/33kV transmission line-2.
In a statement, TCN spokesperson, Ms Ndidi Mbah, said the incident necessitated the emergency opening of the substation at about 7.58 p.m..
This entailed the isolation of Maryland-Ilupeju 132kV line-1, which is the source of power supply to the substation.
Mbah said management is making efforts to put out the fire.
“But due to the presence of oil-immersed equipment within the surroundings of the explosion, it was difficult until the Lagos State Fire Service arrived and put out the fire completely at 8.55 p.m.

“At about 9.02 p.m. the same day, the substation was restored into service,” the spokesperson stated.
TCN attributed the sudden failure of the Maryland-Ikorodu 132kV Line-2 Yellow phase capacitor voltage transformer to ageing and insulation failure.
The company expressed regrets over the inconveniences the incident caused electricity consumers.
“TCN is diligently pursuing the reconductoring/ rehabilitating of all its 132kV transmission lines and switch gears nationwide. This will greatly help eliminate such incidents.”
