VIO to review traffic offence fines in FCT

From Our Correspondent

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, says it will review fines for traffic offences, from the least N2,000 to N5,000 and above.

Mr Kalu Emetu, DRTS’s Director of Public Relations, announced the proposed review during an enlightenment exercise, on Monday, in Abuja.

TheNewsZenith reports that DRTS is staging the enlightenment at selected motor parks in the FCT.

Emetu said the Service decided to impose stiffer penalties to serve as a deterrent and reduce traffic offences in the territory.

“We are hoping that this development will enable motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations. However, the fines depend on the nature and gravity of the offence,” Emetu said.

According to him, if a motorist blocks the road, causing traffic gridlock, DRTS will impound the vehicle immediately.

“The culprit will also pay a fine of N300,000. After one week, if the culprit does not show up, the service will approach the court to obtain a certificate of forfeiture.

“If the court grant the forfeiture order, the property automatically becomes government property. And it is now left for the government to decide what to do with it.

The development, he said, aimed at compelling motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations at all times.

“We urge motorists in FCT to obey traffic rules and regulations for their own safety and those of others.

“It is no longer business as usual as there is a new government in place. So, they should have attitudinal change towards road usage,” the director said.
